Description

On April 3, 2005, the first anti-Japanese protest erupted in Chengdu, the state capital of Sichuan Province in central China. Very rapidly, a wave of full-scale anti-Japanese demonstrations involving tens of thousands people swept over more than 20 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shanghai. The direct trigger of this incident is believed to be Japan's recent campaign for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council and the Japanese government's authorization of new history textbooks that allegedly downplay its invasion of China and whitewash its wartime atrocities committed in its neighboring Asian countries during World War II. A number of other issues were added to the discontent, including the Japanese prime minister's repeated high-profile visits to the controversial Yasukuni War shrine, a long-time unresolved historical tension between the two countries, and the escalating frictions over gas explorations in the East China Sea. The magnitude and duration of the protests in China were unprecedented since Tiananmen Square in 1989, riveting extensive journalistic attention around the globe. It would be interesting to examine salient coverage features and presentation styles, be they similar or different, between global news organizations espousing different journalistic philosophies. As two of the most influential global news media outlets, the BBC and CNN carry a number of distinctive characteristics in terms of their nature, mission and national interest (Kung-Shankleman, 2000). They also have the resources and the expertise to conduct continuous coverage of global news events. Both had intense coverage of the anti-Japanese protests in China. Analyzing their coverage of the same incident will provide insights and delineate the intricate relationship between news philosophy and practice.
